Guidebook to a principal north-south long-distance walking route through eastern France, traversing the Vosges and the Haut-Jura plateau along the GR5/GR53. The 687km (427-mile) waymarked path traverses the entire length of the Vosges, and then climbs up onto the plateau of the Haut-Jura before dropping down to Nyon on the shores of Lake Geneva. The GR5 is one of the great walking routes across Europe, crossing the continent from the Dutch coast to the Mediterranean, and the route described here is the central section (518km) from Schirmeck down to Lake Geneva. In addition, the GR53 in the Northern Vosges from Wissembourg to Schirmeck (169km) is described as an offshoot of the GR5 that allows walkers to complete the entire chain of the Vosges. The route is presented in 11 chapters, which in turn are broken into short sections of a few hours each, allowing for a flexible itinerary and easy route planning. There are also suggestions for shorter circular routes making use of sections of the GR53/GR5, as well as an overview of other long-distance routes in the region. A summary of local history, plants and wildlife and delicacies can be found in the introduction and appendices offer details of facilities on route and full accommodation listings.

This is a practical guidebook to the trekking possibilities in the Vosges and French Jura mountains. These mountains, which contain three regional parks and contrasting landscapes and wildlife habitats, are of a relatively moderate height, and have a well-developed network of waymarked paths that provide a wealth of opportunities for the walker. The book will be useful to anyone who plans to explore this lesser-known corner of France on foot, whether by means of short excursions or longer trails. The main part of the guide describes a continuous long-distance route (672km, 418 miles) which traverses the Vosges and Jura ranges from the German border in the north to Lake Geneva in the south, much of it along the GR5 footpath. Walking the entire route is a significant undertaking, amply rewarded by the diversity of landscapes and villages encountered along the way. The guide has suggestions for circular walks using selected sections of the GR5, ideas for shorter walks from centres throughout the region, and information on alternative long-distance routes. The background section, written with the walker in mind, covers the history, wildlife and landscape of the region.

A popular walking guide to the Silverdale and Arnside Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), at the top of Morecambe Bay in Cumbria and Lancashire, north west England, overlooking the Lake District. 21 day walks are described and hand-illustrated, between Carnforth, Holme, Milnthorpe and Arnside, climbing wooded hills and limestone escarpments with views of the Lake District fells, visiting nature reserves including Leighton Moss RSPB reserve, crossing the Bay itself to Kents Bank and following the canal. Many are the visitors who have speeded past to more renowned National Parks, who, when they do turn off to Silverdale or Arnside, wonder why they didn't come to this beautiful area before. The combinations of rocky coastal scenery, woodland and rough limestone hills either side of the M6 in north Lancashire, make this a paradise for walkers. There is an extensive network of well walked paths through an intricate rocky landscape, a joy to explore. The area is renowned for its flora and fauna, its historic buildings and interesting geological features. Walks are between 2 and 8 miles but packed with interest, taking longer than their mileage implies, and can be combined for longer days.

The guide describes 34 mountain walks in Scotland's far-west peninsula - including Morvern, Ardnamurchan and Ardgour - and on the island of Mull. Mull, Scotland's third largest isle, and for bard Dugold MacPhail 'Of Isles the Fairest', has something for everyone. Those with interests in archaeology, geology and history will be captivated; naturalists will be fascinated by its flora and fauna; but its universal magic is tranquillity, while affording you all the joys of walking in the great outdoors. Across the narrow Sound of Mull, lies Morvern with Ardgour and Ardnamurchan. Here the enchantment continues to develop. At its farthest reaches, approached by a narrow road meandering through the finest scenery, is the most westerly part of the British mainland, Ardnamurchan Point. The allure of Mull, Morvern, Ardnamurchan and Ardgour is outstanding, and once you have seen them, you will want to visit Scotland's far west time after time.

This guidebook describes the GR221, a 140km (87 mile) long-distance trail through northwestern Mallorca, from Port d'Andratx to Pollença. Also known as the 'Ruta de Pedra en Sec' ('the Drystone Route'), the GR221 is a celebration of Mallorca's limestone heritage, taking in many historic drystone structures as it traverses the rocky peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana. Following old stone-paved paths and mule trails, it showcases the region's beautiful landscape of mountains, forests and cultivated terraces, as well as its spectacular coastline. The GR221 can be walked in 1-2 weeks, although the guide also covers 3 alternative start-points and 3 alternative finishes, which would allow for a shorter trek. The main route is presented in 10 stages of 8.5-20.5km (5-13 miles), with a handful of optional detours to bag neighbouring summits. Detailed route description is accompanied by 1:25,000 mapping and inspirational photography, plus a wealth of information on local points of interest. Accommodation and travel are also thoroughly covered: the trail boasts good transport links and plentiful facilities on route, with accommodation in welcoming mountain villages and the occasional 'refugi'. A comprehensive introduction offers the opportunity to discover more about the region's diverse plants and wildlife and unique history and culture, and an English-Spanish-Catalan glossary can be found in the appendix. With a favourable climate and stunning scenery, the Serra de Tramuntana has much to tempt the walker. The GR221 Drystone Route represents an ideal way to explore this fascinating World Heritage Site.

Snowdon is the highest peak south of Scotland in the UK. It certainly looks a mountain from all points of the compass. Five rocky ridges radiate from the summit. Between them are five dark cwms, mainly with sunless depths, that give a forbidding aspect to the approaches. For Snowdon has no sylvan graces. Once the valleys are left behind, it is a treeless waste. There is little heather on its slopes and the grey grass on its less stony sides gives scant nourishment to the hardy mountain sheep that roam on its barren sides. But there is a beauty in this wildness, and the many lakes that lie in its cwms and the small streams that run down into them help to relieve the stern landscape. After describing a tour round the mountain, this book gives details of the five well-marked regular paths up the mountain, the Mountain Railway and the famous Horseshoe Walk. It then deals with a few of the lesser used variations from the beaten track and then concludes with a few hints to budding hill walkers.

An essential guidebook for walking the GR5, one of the world's most spectacular long-distance trails. The GR5 makes its way through the Alps from the shores of Lac Léman at Geneva to the Mediterranean at Nice. A route of 674km (420 miles), it can be trekked in a month, or split over a series of summer trips. The GR5 is well within the reach of fit and moderately experienced walkers and backpackers. There is good signposting and waymarking, and accommodation, food and drink are all available at regular intervals. The paths and tracks are generally well graded, while steep climbs are tackled on zigzag paths, so the overall gradient is not so severe. Every summer, thousands of walkers embark on this trek. This guidebook also describes some scenic variant routes, including the stunning GR55 through the Vanoise National Park and the delightful GR52 that crosses the Mercantour National Park. Full descriptions and maps are provided for these alternatives. The book includes daily stages, timings, ascents and descents, full-colour mapping and gradient profiles, alongside information about facilities and services along the route. The result is an ideal companion to planning and completing your trek.

Patronising advice by a doctor at a retirement course to 'walk a couple of miles a day' challenges architect Sean Rothery to take a proper walk and so, at the age of 65, he sets out to walk the GR5, the Grande Randonee Cinq. From the steely gray North Sea to the intense blue Mediterranean, Sean's 2,300km-long route follows a network of old trails, forest paths, canal banks, Alpine valleys and passes. Along the way, he recounts some of his youthful enterprises, including cycling from Dieppe to Rome in the ruins of post-war Europe and a climbing accident in 1967 that saw him challenge another doctor's prognosis. Ghosts of the past are revisited, most poignantly in the Alps where two friends died in climbing accidents, but also alongside the ruins of First World War trenches. Sketchbook in hand, Sean savors the landscape, history and culture as he passes from one country to another. Every day he looks out for the distinctive red-and-white waymarks of the GR5 - not an easy task, especially when change in the name of progress has cleared swaths of trails. This enthralling diary of a long walk south will have the reader urging the author on to the last step of the way. With black and white photos and sketches by the author.
